AS Website Evaluation

My website has developed and challenges some of today’s website conventions; my website is aimed at the younger audience, being a drug advice website. I have researched and looked deeply into the website talk to frank which like my website is to give advice to a young audience about drugs. Tall to frank is a government funded organisation. In my website I have followed a lot of the conventions shown in talk to frank, but also I have challenged those conventions and done things of my own.

Firstly I have developed the conventions of a website by using much of the same sort of layout you would typically see on a young target audience website. I have the name of my website at the top of screen with rows along the top just below the name of site this row is navigation bar for the user to be able to get around the site; also I have navigation bars going down horizontally down the left hand side also. I have a logo in the top left hand corner next to the name of my site. I have got hyperlinks to social websites down at the bottom of the screen which is would be very conventional as it would be appealing for the young target audience who would most probably be using those networks. The colour scheme I have used would appeal to a younger audience as it is very unique and different. I have got graffiti which I created myself on illustrator, in the background and then I have got a white text on black boxes which have stood out really well. The language in my website varies a lot in the short texts boxes I have made my language very informal so that it would be easier for the target youths to be able to relate with the site, but when It came to writing the information about each of the drugs my text has been much more constructive and wordy so that the audience feel like they are getting professional and correct advice and not just a kid who knows a lot about drugs.
I have also challenged some of the typical conventions found on a drug website. Firstly on the home page instead of just normally being images of the latest information and news feed with some text explaining what it about, I have made my own video which has been put on the home page which will automatically start as you entre the site. This video is about a young boy aged around 18 which is the target audience for the website, and it is about him waking up after taking a heavy amount of drugs in middle of no where trying to find his friend and ends up finding himself being dead. The video being on the home page challenges the typical conventions of a drug advice website. Also I have got a page which is an A-Z page which is very different to most website as is has got loads of Polaroid blank picture on a line on each picture is a letter of the alphabet which can be clicked on and you will be put through to a page giving info of the drugs of that letter i.e. C for cannabis etc. over all I have challenged a few of the conventions of your typical drug advice site.

My website does not have a hugely wide demographic in the since that it is aimed at a specific age range and I am almost certain that not many people out of this age range will want or need to visit this website. This target audience is roughly from 15 – 27, this is the core age at which people in the UK are experimenting with drug use, both male and female but dominantly male. Usually the lower class would be most likely to be around the drug scene as it will be these settlements where people will be trying to make some quick money. My website appeals to this young target audience in layout language and colours. The colours used are very unique and different using graffiti making it look very antisocial and looks like it hasn’t much authority which would defiantly appeal to my core audience. The layout is very conventional and easy to use with opposite colours of white/black which will make it easy for the audience to be able to understand and navigate the site without problems. I have got a video and also pictures which again makes it easier and less wordy so it can all be taken in and understood better. The video specifically is about a boy which fits into the relevant target audience which is a young man in his late teens, this is ideal for my site as the audience can really relate with what is going on in the video. The language through it is very informal so that the young audience will find it easier to understand and relate with as they wouldn’t be interested in reading something copy and pasted from wikilipedia. When it did come to the information on the drugs however, the language used varied to the original approach of seeming informal. I made the information given on the drugs seem more formal as I wanted the audience to feel like they were getting some real honest professional advice instead of a teen who just has taken a lot of drugs. I have tried hard in being able to make my website relatable for the target audience and I feel like I have done so.

It is aimed at a specific age range and I am almost certain that not many people out of this age range will want or need to visit this website. Usually the lower class would be most likely to be around the drug scene as it will be these settlements where people will be trying to make some quick money. This target audience is roughly from 15 – 27; this is the core age at which people in the UK are experimenting with drug use, both male and female but dominantly male. I feel like with all the colour scheme, colours and layout that I have appealed to that audience and the survey of my results also agree.

I feel like I have learnt a lot about technologies and also feel like I have improved my website making skills on I web. I think I have got quicker at everything and in all have become a lot more productive with time than I was when making my preliminary school website. I think I have learnt some skills on I web which have improved my website a significant amount. Firstly I learnt how to correctly hyperlink navigation bars, images and videos to make my website easy to navigate. Also I have learnt how to make rollovers so that when mouse is over a hyperlink the user will know that this is a hyperlink going to another page, the rollover goes green. Another skill I have learnt since my preliminary website is to be able to import my own video and then being able put the video on an auto play and auto loop so that the video begins and repeats when you entire the website there is no need for have to find the play button and waiting for it the buffer. One other skill that I have learnt since my preliminary website is being able to Photoshop various of images and text and importing them into my site my title of my site “Blown Back Info” was created all in Photoshop and then was imported into my I web, so was my logo Polaroid picture and the pegs which are holding the Polaroid pictures on the line on the A-Z page.

Over all I feel like my main website has turned out really well and I feel like it relates well with its core target audience with the layout, colour and language. Also I feel my site has a good amount of images and videos which overall has made the site very easy to navigate.
